Larry:
I did some rooting around in old brain cells, and recalled the Rail Marine Interest Group (chaired by John Teichmoeller) web site, which still appears to be functional. See: http://trainweb.org/rmig/history.html
This is the group that published “The Transfer” magazine. Issue #26 addresses (briefly) PRR activities in the Port of Norfolk. Transfer #34 had an article on Hampton Roads. It appears that you can order individual issues of 26 and 34, but you’d have to get #24 on a CD that contains issues 21 – 24. Since you have to order them directly from John himself, you should ask him about N&W boats, barges, carfloats, etc.

Wow- That is an AWESOM set of photos. Now all we need are color swatches, and I’ll do decal sets. Are the colors in photo 30/31 accurate, or was the Coe done in the blue and yellow used on the RR diesels (as seems to be the case in photo 31/31)? And it looks, from several photos that the Coe did its “sea” trials in NY Harbor. I’m ecstatic!

The archives has some nice images of the W.R. Coe including the interior.

You might want to consult a copy of Norfolk and Western Railway, Pocahontas Coal Carrier, by Richard E. Prince. Chapter 13 discusses "East Coast Coal Boats and Piers and has listings of several of the companies serving the area, together with some roster information. One of the companies is named Pocahontas Steamship Company, apparently incorporated in Wilmington, DE.

Seeing that no one else has replied to your question, I will tell you what I know. I don’t know the answer but I can reply with my experience. I grew up in the 50's and early 60’s, not very far from the Lambert’s Point yard. My father worked for a time in the car shop at Lambert’s Point and an uncle was hostler there. I never heard my father or uncle mention that N&W had any of their own boats. I know there were many commercial tug boat companies in the Norfolk area and these commercial tugs would dock and undock the colliers that came in to be loaded. I, personally, do not remember seeing any tugs with N&W markings. I could be wrong, but this is my personal experience as I remember it. I hope somebody can give a definitive answer to your question as I would also like to know for sure. I am modeling the Lambert’s Point yard into South Norfolk.

Subject: Norfolk & Western 1954 Boat Roster
I am doing research on Lambert's Point and eventually want to model the coal pier 1954-1955 cira. I want to know what boats the Norfolk & Western owned during that time and if there were photos and specifications.
Thanks for your help and any leads.
