Frank is correct that there are fixer uppers in brass and bargains to be
had.
But the whole premise of the "Bored with steam" is the lack of steam models
over the 34 years since the NWHS started in 1985.
Again the average modeler DOES NOT have the skills, money, or time,
therefore massed produced models are needed.
Will that happen, Don't thinks so.
Broadway Limited announced the N&W wood cabooses years ago and did not
receive enough orders. As for Spring Mills N&W cabooses I am seriously
considering asking for a refund of almost $3000 (2 years is to long to tie
up that much Money).
BlI produced the Y6b and Class A in thousands unlike brass as only around
100 pieces are made (doesn't fill the void).
When those of us who kitbash, refurbish older brass models, or can afford
$2500 for new brass are only looking at the small picture and our needs
only.
It's like saying - I got it and I satisfied my needs. We need to think of
the masses not just of our ourselves.
Erik and others start their post about themselves and what they
accomplished, but again it's the masses. I owned over 300+ N&W and VGN
models alone. I am now into O Scale because more is available.
Erik of Midwestern Model works is now bringing high end brass diesel models
as George Kohs has done with steam.
So I do not see any changes in availability of steam models, as the support
is not there. So I am following the trend to the 70s-80s movement(which I
grew up) because so much more
is continually becoming available. If more of a variety of steam becomes
available then I will go back to steam, But that's not happening.

I believe I made my point that there is a lack of progress and support in
RTR N&W steam locomotives.

In addition t[o Sunset, and Possibly PSC, LMB did an N&W M. I have one and
am more than pleased with it. They are available if you look and are
patient. Bargains show up at train shows, and, sadly, estate sales. And
since I like working on brass and diecast I'll admit to being a sometime
"bottom feeder" on eBay, and looking for the magic words "does not run",
"not known if it runs [it doesn't]", or "needs work". And sometimes a few
bucks on detail parts [also often available cheap as they have "matured" at
shops because "there's no call for them]. And it can be fun working on a
diecast locomotive to more clearly resemble a specific prototype. Also lets
you think what some of us, or our elders, went through years back. When I
got into HO in 1969 there was one Virginian model that was even somewhat
close:
the Varney battleship gon (card sides).
Electrics: Eric et al; you're not "stuck with brass" if you're willing to go
1956 or later. In addition to the Alco/KMT ELC and the Overland (Ajin?)ELC,
the Bachman ELC is quite respectable, I think. Oh; Alco EL2b's and EL3's
are available if you're willing to work on them; or if you can trade
something you like to do, and can do, with someone who likes working on
brass.
