Ken,
Thanks for the good info and insight. I understand. My N&W railfanning in the early age for me was 1957-1968 and the early diesels were almost as exciting to me as the steamers. I can remember many shiny black RS-11's and GP-9's in multiple and with the neat herald plates were pretty nice.
To me I would appreciate and value a script one as much as a steam builder's plate. Maybe someday one will surface for less than the price of a new car. lol

I think it was a matter of not a lot of them were saved, or if they were, they certainly have not surfaced. I think some of the issue there was the folks who were fans in the 1950s were mostly steam fans, when the diesels came, a lot of those folks simply found other stuff to do, and were not really collecting. I can see that happened in Roanoke, active NRHS group, steam left, people left, young ones to college or relationships, no time to fool with a lot. One fellow here, Bill Cecil, took a lot of great N&W steam and early diesel stuff 1955-1960, then it was like he dropped off the face of the earth until the mid 1970s. He did not go shoot much for those middle years.
Here is a photo of one that I saw in an antique mall about 4 years back, and yes, it is long since gone, was the same one I was later offered. Sorry for the poor quality, it was a phone photo.

Ken,
I would have thought, with hundreds of engines having 2 each they would be plentiful. Seems they would have been collectible items like bells, whistles, plates, etc. Go figure!
