dreadnaught ends

Can anyone explain dreadnaught ends on boxcars?  I think I understand the reason---corrugation makes it stronger without taking up much space, but how are they named?  I have seen 4/4 but I have no idea what that refers to.  Other information appreciated as well.Thank you,Mike ShockleyN&W Guyandotte Division
