Ed
I have bought a bunch of ballast from a company called Arizona Rock & Mineral, http://www.rrscenery.com/?page_id=4315
They have a color called NS Bright Gray. An excellent color. They also have a slightly darker color for CSX.

Thanks to all. I had not thought of the grade factor. On my way to the store!

Also Ed,
If you have any grades on your layout, it would be a good idea to add sand on the roadbed because of the large amount of sand locomotives used to get traction on grades. On Blue Ridge Grade, the sand was so heavy that the roadbed looked white.

Very Respectfully,

On my old layout, I used a base layer of cinders with a layer of the gray blend over it. I now use Kato Unitrack, and are at present considering whether to use the ballast sold for use with the Unitrack or stick with my original Woodland Scenics formula.
