Thanks, Roger! I prefer Chrome when it works, so this is good news.

Our ISP has issued a new certificate for our commissary sales site. In limited testing I don't see the problem with google chrome. I believe this issue has been corrected.

Good summary of the events, and I’m abashed that I didn’t provide one to the NW Modeling List.

I’d like to add that I greatly appreciate your and Roger’s interventions, and the efforts of The Commissary to stay current in the face of constant “improvements” from the web browser developers.

One lesson I’ll remember is that if the Check-Out page won’t work with one web browser, trying another might result in success.

The order I was able to place with The Commissary yesterday was for drawings of the LC-2 and EL-3a to help me assess whether the latter might form the basis of a model of the former—as suggested by Mason Cooper, who noted, “The Virginian electric model produced by Alco would substitute for the LC2 as they both used the common Westinghouse design.”

A cursory glance indicates that new body sides would be required, but until I get the J-sized drawings (yikes), I won’t draw any final conclusions.

I will report in this forum on how these locos compare in whatever dimensions the first set of drawings (over $100 worth) support comparison.

Thank you, Alex, Roger and Mason! Also, thanks to Greg Harrod (who suggested ordering by snal mail—doh!) and to Phil Miller who tried to verify my problem—and took the trouble to report his results. Good forum!

Just as a follow-up on this discussion Eric and Roger Link worked through the commissary problem today.

Msg 1 from Roger Link to Eric was sent at 10:10 am:

Eric,
I haven't seen or heard of this problem but there have been many web browser updates recently and some of them have been about SSL certificates.
Which web browser version are you using and on which operating system?? Can you send us a screen shot? Typically you can click on the "red x" and open the security concern to see what the browser sees as problems with the certificate.

Msg 2 from Eric to Roger was sent at 3:12 pm
Roger:

Your email prompted me to try Internet Explorer, which worked, giving me an https connection to The Commisary check-out page. So I was able to successfully place an order. Thank you.

With regard to what still doesn’t work: I was using Google Chrome Version 42.0.2311.135 m on Windows 7. I have provided a screen shot of the problem for your viewing enjoyment.

Thank you!

Msg 3 from Roger to Eric was sent at 4:05 pm

Eric,
I was able to reproduce the problem here. I think its a recent google-chrome update that increased client security by more rigorous certificate and encryption standards. Will email our ISP tech support do see if we can get this corrected.

- Roger

Since our website has to work with multiple browser versions, we might not know we have a problem until someone tells us. And then we work to get it corrected. I just thought the people on this mailing list would be interested in how the issue was (or is being) resolved since Eric and Roger were able to correspond directly with each other.

Your note is GREATLY appreciated. I will send an email to the Commissary, as I still get a crossed-out https when I try to check out.

Thank you!

Eric,

NWHS commissary has attempted to contact you via email, but the email address the NWHS has for you came back as a bad address. That is why I am contacting you via the modeling list.

There is no “on-duty” commissary volunteer who can respond to phone calls which is why we use an answering machine. Your list was so long (which is appreciated) that the answering machine timed out with all of the drawing numbers and descriptions. Also multiple numbers and descriptions via phone lead to mistakes.

I did notice on our website for the TAB (right hand side) where it says “Contact the Society,” when you go to that TAB one of the contacts notes for questions about orders or on-line orders the address for the commissary is listed as: commissary at nwhs.org<mailto:commissary at nwhs.org>. Alternatively you can also use salenw at aol.com<mailto:salenw at aol.com>

On-Line orders are not processed until credit card numbers are confirmed, which is why we need a valid credit card.

I’m trying to place an order with The Commissary, but the SSL encryption on their check-out page isn’t working, and I won’t put my credit card info out on an unsecure web page. I tried calling in my order (pain), but the “recorded line” hung up before I could finish my order (more pain).

No Commissary email address provided on the NWHS web site.

No Commissary phone # to get to a real live person.

Can’t submit an order without entering a valid credit card number.

What’s a mother to do?
