I have a picture of a blue caboose in service in late 1982 and two red ones with the hamburger herald in the Bellevue deadline in 1985.  I think you would be pretty safe having some around in a c1974 layout..

For later N&W caboose classes Testors Chrysler Engine Red was and is still a
good match.  For wood sided cabooses in the steam days, don't forget that
the paint would have been covered with a coat of varnish that would darken
and yellow with time.

I assume the blue cabooses started appearing about the same time as the blue
locomotives in 1966, but when did they disappear?  We they repainted red
with the NW logo as needed or was there a deliberate plan to get rid of the
blue?  Were there any hamburger herald  red units still around?  What would
the mix of caboose paint schemes have been in 1974?
