N at W BLUE

[NW Modeling List]

   Thank you all again for the many contributions on the N&W Blue question. One person suggested the Delstar : DAR102232 Blue that was orginally used on 1959 GM trucks. Today I was off to my local paint store and had the number cross referenced to a Du Pont paint formula. As it turned out this was a GM National Fleet Color from 1959. I had a half pint mixed in DuPont's NASON brand of fast dry Acrylic Enamel. This paint is thinned 25% with NASON 441-20 or 441-21 reducer. I thinned 35% so as to not cover fine details on my model and used thin coats until I was satisfied with coverage. The color is very close to many of the pictures that my son and I took back in the day and pictures of diesels pictured in Stephen Timko's Norfolk & Western in color Volume 2. It is on the high gloss side but will be toned down in the weathering process of the completed model.

  As others have pointed out the Pevlar Blue color changed as soon as the spray gun was cleaned and put away for the next job. The use of C&O Enchantment Blue with 10 drops of Engine Black is a great representation of the color and Microscale Decals suggests using Floquil light blue another good choise. The blue I used today and the two mentioned above are all good choices but are all different in color from one another. The fact is that as it has been pointed out and in looking at pictures they are all the correct color. None of these diesels were garage kept and they all saw use in the rain,snow and 100+ degree heat. Grandma didn't drive them to the store but Grandpa used the heck out of them.

  I just retired from Ford Motor Company after 45 years. I've waited 45 years to live my hobby and just this conversation on Pevlar Blue has made it more enjoyable already. Thank you everyone.

If someone has the DuPont numbers I can check with my DuPont jobber (my nephew) and see if the formula is current. I'm sure if it was DuPont paint that was used it was Dulux enamel that has since gone the way of the Dodo, but they may have a Centari acrylic enamel formula for it.
