Jim,
My understanding is the N&W put lettering on the engine until the miod 30's then it started going on the tenders.  I hope this short answer helps, if not there are a lot of people on here who know a lot more than I.

I am painting three k-3 brass locomotives. My problem is all of the pictures I have seen there are is no lettering on the tender. Did the Norfolk and Western put all of the lettering under the cab windows? Did they ever put Norfolk and Western on any of the tenders and if they did what were the number on the locomotives with the emblem on the tenders?  Any help will be appreciated,  Jim Bryant
