No, not for the 604. But then, you knew that! Jim Nichols

I helped Dixon with some of the photos and proof-read his text a couple of
times to make corrections, but knew nothing of the cover painting until I
received the finished book. Robert West does good work, but obviously worked
from excursion 611 photos for the cover painting, and must have been in a
hurry, since the window arrangements on the passenger cars are not
particularly accurate either. This is not his best effort. Jim Nichols

I am not in the least surprised. Having worked for Dixon for a number of
years, I worked very hard to make sure things were correct in his books on
subjects that I knew something about, not at his expense, but my own
interest in getting it right in print.

However, at the Bluefield Train Show in November 2005, in regard to his own
books, Dixon stated to me and my future wife:

"The people who buy these books don't care if they are right or not, or the
photos look good, they only care if they have photos."

I was appalled. That is a direct quote, not paraphrased or extracted from an
entire conversation as the media is prone to do.

The reason I asked this question is that on the front cover of Dixon's new
book that was just released is an illustration of the N&W J 604 by Robert
West with a double headlight. It just strikes me funny that a book is
printed about the history of the N&W Powhatan Arrow and the cover isn't
historically correct. Just an observation.

No excursion service only.

I believe I know the answer to this question, but there seems to always to
be an exception to every rule.

Did the N&W steam, particularly the J's ever have a double beam headlight in
the 50's?
