We're working on an article involving the Battleship gons, including the modeling "issues". I asked Steve Summers for his thoughts on Steve R's question. His answer:

Trucks - while not completely accurate, the Athearn Buckeye trucks are suggested. Yes, the axle spacing is like 6” too large but given that the correct trucks are not available and the Athearn ones are relatively inexpensive, they are the best choice.

Decals - yes, the picture looks horrible, but that is the ‘old’ F&C decals. The decals in the box that you sent me is a huge improvement, you never actually came out and said if these were F&C’s new decals or you threw in one of Mosteller’s sets. Whatever I got is good and Steve should use them.

Grabirons - Also be sure to suggest that Steve make a jig to help with his grabiron locations, this will help a ton. I suggest he buy Tichy 24” grabs, part 293-3053 and Tichy 24” drop grabs, part 293-3057 instead of bending wire if he’s going to make a bunch of them. Also, Tichy makes nice plastic stirrup steps (part 293-3045).

Weight - be sure to mention to add weight to the cars. The new F&C kit has an underframe and a separate interior floor, should be great for adding a floor weight. I recommend .040” brass cut to fit. This will make the car ride better.
