Dan:
Indeed it was NKP 759 that hauled the last No. 4 to Norfolk and the tender
was
painted NORFOLK & WESTERN. N&W had made several conversions to
diesel-powered passenger trains before the RF&P E's and the ACL "Purple
People-Eaters" were leased. During a coal strike in the 40's, Southern
power
on the Tennessee trains went through Monroe - Bristol. Then on Jan. 1,
1957,
I was en route back to college riding No. 25 to Roanoke and changing to No.
45
for Johnson City. On that date, No. 45 arrived with Southern diesels. N&W
had
arranged to have Southern units protect the Tennessean, Pelican, and The
Birmingham Special.

Seems that before the "red birds" began operating in and out of Bristol, The
Tennessean had an engine failure near Wytheville. Radford Division's Chief
Dispatcher opted to appropriate the GP-9 assigned to the Pulaski District
local to assist No. 45 to Bristol. M/U'ing the Geep to Southern's "F" unit
turned
out to be quite a problem. Every time the engineer depressed the independent
brake on the GP-9, the Southern unit would sand, but they made it to Bristol
. . . . . so the story goes.
