One correction - the last Pocahontas in 1971 was not handled by the 611. It was handled by NKP Berkshire 759.

Well, we have heard the why, and at least partially, the when. As the earlier writer stated the first N&W GP9s were delivered in 1955. However according to William Warden's N&W Passenger Service book as revised by Kenneth Miller; steam continued on passenger trains into 1958. The last steam powered "Pocahontas" operated on June 18, 1958. This of course discounts the very last "Pocahontas" on the day before Amtrak in 1971; which was powered by the 611. At any rate N&W had passenger equipped GP9s on order, but in their hurry to eliminate steam on the remaining passenger service; they leased E type passenger diesels from ACL (Atlantic Coast Line) and RF&P (Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac) in the summer of 1958. These locomotives were lettered "Norfolk and Western" but retained the purple and silver or blue and grey respectively of their owners. Apparentally the N&W Geeps started coming on line in the fall of 1958 and were in the (dare I say) "tuscan red" with yellow stripes and lettering known as the "Redbird" scheme. Hope that gives you a better handle on what you needed to know. Dan
