Chuck:
Wig-wags were manufactured by the Magnetic Flagman Co. in the 20's.
A pair protected the U.S. 17 crossing west of Bridge 7. By the 60's,
they were no longer state of the art grade crossing protection and, in fact,
they became a signal maintainer's nightmare -- lots of moving parts to
fail. There was one at North Street in Waverly, VA that last until 1976
(or later). On the Fort Wayne Division there was one at Roanoke, IN
that was cantilever-mounted - installed by the Wabash, I'd guess.
