Frank:
The Winston District of the Shenandoah Division was not ATC - equipped, but
the
Class A's were restricted because their overhang (for lack of a better word)
wouldn't clear the truss bridge at Dan River south of Pine Hall. The
railroad
crosses from one side of the river to the other on an "S" curve. The bridge
is
in the middle of a 7.9 degree curve to the left and a 10.5 degree curve to
the
right.

One event where double-headed J's were used on the Winston District was
for the Eisenhower special. There was no turntable nor wye at North
Winston -- engines were turned on a loop. According to Louis Newton,
to get the J's headed north, the loop had to be greased, then each engine
was pulled around with a switcher. Very slowly.
