PCM Y6b question

On most  Y6's pictures I have seen, on the engineer's side there is a "box" 
where  the running board steps up, over the front engine near where the front 
tube  sheet would be.  This is missing on the PCM model.  What is this  device 
and did all Y6's have them? 


That would be the cab signal box. They were put on engines used on the  
Shenandoah Div. Not all of the engines had them.
