41'Ballast Hopper

The prototype Walthers used for this run matches a photo of a ballast hopper
found in Jim Nichols' N&W Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Cars, by
Morning Sun, which can be found on page 127, which is an example of a H46A.
The lettering is what Walthers matched, and the road numbers they use
reflect H46A class cars. The car that they used is not exactly
prototypically correct, but is a close-enough.

I'm not sure who the prototype manufacturer was, NS didn't re-paint that
onto the cars that I have photos of. In looking through my collection, I've
only shot the H46, which appears to be an exact match to the subsequently
built H46A's. Maybe Bob Bowers can answer that question, my guess is that it
was built by Greenville / Trinity. (Walthers didn't put a manufacturer's
logo on their car either.)

According to internal NS information that I have, all of these cars have
been repainted and re-lettered into NS. Their original road numbers, classes
and new road numbers are below:

Car Class Original # Series New # Series Qty
H46 544100-544244 994600-994744 145
H46A 544245-544365 994745-994865 121

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Russ Goodwin
