DCC

I recently purchased the Prodigy system complete with an 8amp booster and four handheld controllers. It works great and is easy to use. I have about a dozen steamers on my roster and am upgrading them to DCC one or two at a time, so far I have a Y, a J, an E and a non-N&W 2-10-0 running and its a lot easier to use than I thought it would be.
I think the key to DCC is to pick a system you are comfortable using that fits your general level of expertise and that has the features you feel you want and need. I am not really that interested in putting sound in my locomotives but the Prodigy system does have that capability. That is the thing I did was look at what was out there and what I needed and wanted it to do for me, and shopped for those systems. To each his or her own, I think...

Rather than choosing based on popularity, I suggest going to some dealers or clubs and trying out, hands on, as many systems as you can. My club did, and decided to purchase NCE. Most of the members had never used DCC and were nervous about it's complexity. Most of them voted to keep DC for several years...but once they tried the systems, they found the NCE was so easy to use they voted immediately to switch to DCC and buy NCE.

A lot of people I knew bought Digitrax because it's everywhere and because they feel they'll get more help and support because it's widespread. Most of them are quite happy, but those that try our NCE cabs still feel it's easier to use. The level of technical support is about equal if you have access to email and the internet.

Just my experience. Personally, I bought a Wangrow System One years ago for my layout and when the command station dies, I'll go back out and check out each system again. That's the greatness of the compatibility issues. All my decoders and power boosters will work with whatever system I buy next.

Best of luck to you in your search for a new control system.

Just a note about DCC:

Popularity of DCC Systems by sales that was published in MR?
#1 - Digitrax [Largest of DCC owners]
#2 - NCE [not a close second, but one of 2 top major players]
#3 - Lens [sales I beleive were only 8%, with the owner up there in years and some buyers wondering if support will be there if anything happens to him. One man company with all the knowledge.]

Hope this helps,
