Actually, this track is used extensively. Anything that would interfere with the train movements is kept cut back, but the embankments, fills, and property to the sides of the track is not kept cleared anymore. They let it go after the pole line was turned off. Remenants of the pole line are still up in Seven Mile Ford, but that's only because its so grown up around it that the contractor couldn't get to the poles to cut them down.

For those who don't know, the contractor was fired, so remnants of the pole line are laying all over the place between Seven Mile Ford and Atkins. From Atkins eastward, it still stands intact for the mostpart.

I take this to mean the track than runs (ran?) over the trestle is not used much? Otherwise I would think they would keep the RoW in better shape...

The Seven Mile Ford Trestle is visible from the interstate if you look fast. Otherwise, get off the Seven Mile Ford exit and go north toward the tracks and you'll see it. You'll drive right under it. Look at the center stone in the arch, it shows the year it was built. (I won't give the year away to make it more interesting!)
It does look pretty much the same as it did in Link's era except that NS has let the right of way grow over, and the river bank is pretty overgrown as well. If you want to see it, I recommend you go before the foliage comes out, or your view will be limited. In Link's time all this area was kept cleared.

Thanks Ed! I thought i remembered seeing a sign along I81 somewhere in there for Seven Mile Ford. I should drive up there just to see if it still looks at all like what it looked like when Mr. Link took the picture up there. Besides, it would be a nice drive in the spring....

Seven Mile Ford is 3.31 miles EAST of Chilhowie.

Isn't 7 Mile Ford in that general area, the scene of one of O. Winston Link's famous pictures?

Andre:
Located between Glade and Chilhowie was one of my favorite places --
greater metropolitan Snapps. There's a reverse 6 degree curve there.
Eastbound, Snapps is the last outpost of civilization before arrival at
Chilhowie.
