This is a great thread and interesting to those of us who want to
understand a bit more about the day-to-day operations of the N&W,
especially before and just after computers came in to play to share and
transmit information. One can wade through *From Mine to Market* to get an
early insight into car distribution and disputes that can arise. But it's
details like David's "I was there" notes that help explain somewhat how the
N&W worked (or didn't) on any given day. Grant has done a great job at
capturing a wealth of details from the Old Heads, but those people are
dwindling in numbers. It will become more difficult in a few years to find
anyone who can claim employment fully with the Norfolk & Western pre-merger.
