Everyone, I was contacts off-list by two people, both of whom had the same, very obvious (now) answer for the first line of the gable-end sign:

Norfolk and Western Ry.

Sheesh. 😊

The Ohio Railway Museum recently shared three photos of #578 being transported to their museum in 1959. Happily for me, all were taken while the locomotive was parked on the Tomato Track, alongside Circleville, Ohio’s, freight station. Before finding this, I had all of two photos of this building.

However, I’m having trouble making out the wording of the top line of the gable-end sign. Perhaps those of you with more knowledge of this topic an take an educated guess; my guess is that this kind of wording was pretty standardized? And a similar question for the ridge sign (second attachment).

Side note, I cropped both images down to manage the message size, and to keep the ORM attribution. If anyone would like to see the full image, I can send them in a separate email.
