Very possible. The boiler/firebox proportions on the A were not "average", i.e., what you would customarily expect. The combustion chamber was very large and the flues were, contrary to contemporary trends, very long, something like 24 ft. This indicates to me that the A's would not tolerate low grade coals. N&W used coal that was in the range of 14,000 btu's. Average would be in the 12,000 btu range. Ash content would be another consideration, but I don't know enough about that to comment.

Perhaps someone can confirm a rumor that I heard about the 1208's test runs on the Pennsy.
I was once told that the PRR used two different grades of coal in its steam locomotives: a higher grade for passenger locomotives and a lower grade for freight locomotives. The 1208, being primarily a freight locomotive, got the lower grade of coal and its steaming quality on the Pennsy was never equal to its capabilities on the N&W.
Any truth to that rumor?

Is there any information or pictures on 1208’s test run on the PRR? Specifically location, what service/trains it was tested on, and any photographs of these test runs. Thanks.
