Rick’s talk on this topic is one that I would have loved to have seen in person, so thanks to the Society for recording and posting this.
I’m not certain Rick is on the list, but if he is, I have a few follow up questions.
You mentioned that the D&H, C&NW, C&O, NP, Mil, and NYC used welded boilers somewhat extensively, or experimented with them. Were all of these boilers products of ALCo, or were other vendors (Baldwin, etc.) also developing this product?
Since there was a smaller (or zero) efficiency penalty for welded boilers, did the ICC allow or did the vendor experiment with, thinner steel for the boiler courses?
Excepting the new-build T-1, have any welded boilers made their way into the preservation era? Either originals that are still in service (or on display), or as new replacements?
Regarding the lower tubes wasting away quicker than the upper ones, why was that? For example, did they burn quicker due to the insulating scale, was there more oxygen in suspension in the colder lower part to accelerate corrosion? Something else?
A long time ago, when the Reading T1 came through my neck of the woods on the Freedom Train, it had a couple of leaking stays in the firebox. Dad took me out there to hang around as one of the local old heads climbed in and caulked them (dad and the old-heads were involved with steam on the Hocking Valley Scenic). That was the first I heard that term, and I was puzzled for about thirty years about what kind of goo would work in a firebox!
