Z Cylinder Class Plates

Matt

My guess is they did have Z1 plates on 1300-1314 all where gone by 1934 so doubt any exist. Your answer may be in the Rev. books that’s where I would look . I have a Z1a and Z1b plate they have different fonts. Builder Photos show the Z1a badge plates clearly . Got to remember they were built three different places so that might explain the difference . As a plate collector I can tell you the drawings in the archives are puzzling and often are not true to life when it comes to plates .

Subject: Re: Z Cylinder Class Plates

Everyone, I have a couple of follow up questions/observations on the discussion of the Class Badge Plates for Z’s.

There is a drawing in the archives (https://www.nwhs.org/archivesdb/detail.php?ID=37105) that shows both “Z1” and “Z1b” on the same drawing. The Z1a is notably missing (There is no drawing for the Z1a in the archives). That got me wondering; was there never a Z1a class badge? Did those locomotives simply retain a Z1, with no sub-class, until end of life? This question may not have an answer, I just thought it curious.

On a related curiosity note, Mike Rector and I visited Time Hensley late last year. As Tim noted previously, he has a Z1b class badge, which I snapped a photo of. When I was typing up this email today I noticed that the “font” on his is different than the drawing - sans serif (his) vs serif style (drawing). That’s an interesting variance! Apparently some 1940’s guerilla graphic designer in the foundry had opinions about what it should look like… :)

Thanks Jimmy and Ed. It’s amazing what you can find when there’s multiple eyes helping!

Now that you folks have me looking, I think I was missing them because of the (understandably) low resolution of the archive images and the ones that I can see appear to be black (or covered in soot).

Ed, thanks for the observation that they are only on the rear cylinders. That helped as well.

Thanks everyone!

Matt and All, USRA 2-8-8-2 Series, Classic Power 3 by Tom Dressler, page 7 has a photo of Z1a 1353 with a class badge, however, the badge is on the rear set of cylinders. Also, USRA 2-8-8-2 Series, Classic Power 3A, by Dressler, has a photo of Z1a 1361 sporting a class badge on her rear cylinders as well. I have seen a few other examples in books, (a magnifying glass helps!). -Ed Burnett, Lynchburg

Mike reminded me of that, Tim. I even have a photo of it! I have yet to see a photo of a Z1a with a class badge/plate. I’ll keep looking.

Thanks Ken. I’d gone through all of the Z and Z1a drawings, but quit before searching Z1b.

I came across a variety of photos that *should* have made badge plates visible. I’ll take another look.
