N&W had a plan to renumber all SD-40's and SD-40-2's as 6000-6207.  Whether
or not this had to do with the proposed C&O merger I don't know.

As purchased N&W SD-40's and SD-40-2's were numbered:

1580-1624 SD40's            45 units
1625-1652 SD-40-2's        28 units
6073-6207 SD-40-2's       135 units

Those units originally numbered in the 1500 and 1600 series - 73 units -
would become N&W 6000-6072 and the units delivered
as 6073-6207 =135 units - would retain their original numbers N&W 6073-6207.

As such N&W SD-40's and SD-40-2's would be numbered 6000-6207.  In the end
the renumbering of the 1500 and 1600 series units never took place.
