Adam,
Thanks for the unique photo. Best shot I've seen of an H-4 hopper. Is the brakeman standing on the end railings of one of the RS-11?

Mr. James Wall of Rural Hall NC (who surely must be known as Mr. Wall-in-the-Hall,) posted an item mentioning that he is interested in the N&W in Winston-Salem.

So, just for him, attached is a photo I took on December 10, 1966, at the old diamond where the N&W crossed the Southern just west of the Winston-Salem depot. The exp[osure was made with a Leica M2 and that old-timey film called Panatonic X, ASA 32. The day was cloudy and the image lacks contrast. Perhaps I should re-scan the negative (if I can find it ! ) and Photoshop the image for better contrast.

There are several noteworthy items in the photo, including the composite N&W hopper. But my favorite item is the Brakeman who has "gone high" to relay a hand signal to the Engineman. That is the way we operated back in the days before those foul, cussed radio-thingies... we "went high and passed signals by hand."

In my time of running down the Punkin Vine, all trains from Roanoke terminated at North Winston. I think the old timers told me they had stopped yarding trains "downtown" (as they called it) around 1926, at which time North Winston Yard had been built, and after which raffic between North Winston and "downtown" was handled by a yard job. So I never made the two-and-a-half mile trip between North Winston and Winston-Salem.  I did ride No's 11 and 12 from Roanoke several times in the early 1960s, but that train was then terminating at North Winston.

Also for my friend, Mr. Wall, I will attach my humble little list of N&W Shenandoah Division Telegraph Calls, which identifies the tower which once stood at this location as "BS." Hopefully, some day a photograph of that structure will surface. And, unfortunately, I do not now remember what this interlocking was called after "BS" went away, or where the interlocking was controlled from.
