The Ohio Rail Development Commission has approved the award of a $1 million grant and a $750,000 loan to Regional Rail LLC for Cincinnati Eastern Railroad's (CCET) project to replace railroad ties across several Ohio counties.
The proposed $2 million project involves the purchase and installation of 15,500 railroad ties on CCET’s line in Clermont, Brown and Adams counties, as well as tie replacement on two bridges. The railroad has been transporting an increasing amount of stone on the far eastern side of the line, which has created significant strain on the existing tie structure, commission officials said in a press release.
Replacing the ties will improve the safety of operations on a larger extent of CCET’s network. The project is the first step in a more comprehensive rehabilitation effort of the railroad, they said.
"This project represents a strategic investment that not only provides opportunities for more businesses to access rail services, but more importantly addresses the immediate need to improve safety of operations," said Matthew Dietrich, the commission's executive director.
Regional Rail acquired the CCET earlier this year.
"We are very appreciative of the rail commission’s willingness and ability to quickly roll up their sleeves and jump right in with Regional Rail as we work to stabilize operations on Cincinnati Eastern and help to safely work with customers to convert even more freight traffic from truck movement to rail in the Route 32 corridor," said Regional Rail President and CEO Alfred Sauer.
