Forgive me for jumping in late into this conversation, but I think Jim Gillum might be rolling over in his grave right now. The reason for having an archive in the first place is so that the Society can control the material and not have it wasting away in some dusty old basement somewhere. I completely understand about the need to provide for the future considering the aging of our members (I'm getting up there, too). I just want to ensure that the Sociery continues to be in control of our materials and that members can continue to have access to the materials in the future. Just my 2 cents.

Larry, where have you been - living under a rock for the past five years? Before you make such a demand for needing "answers to these things," please go back through each issue of "The Arrow" to refresh yourself on the events which have unfolded and which have been described/reported in complete detail and transparency by the officers of the organization. Just saying "no offense, but" does not diminish the sting of your words. It's offensive to me as a past VP for that entire period and as one who still has dust in his lungs from moving over 7,000 square feet of material out of GOB East.

My two cents I be looking for the best home in the long run no matter where that may be. Why would you limit yourself to Roanoke? . And what would it matter if no ones left in Roanoke to run it ? I hope this does not become a rushed to thing. I agree it’s time to start having the conversation . The archives can live on in Digital cyber-space forever . That’s why is so important to keeping scanning , scanning, scanning. This needs lots of discussion and I want to hear from everyone especially the people that have been involved with the archives the people that have built it from the ground up . No offense Tim but you have not been on that bus for most of the trip. Just don’t rush into anything without a lot of input . What is our 5 year 10 year 15 year plan ?, We need space right now , We desperately need to get the stuff that’s stored scanned that came from GOB . So what are those plans?
What grants have we applied for in the past year? Who have we ask for money ? Norfolk Southern has passed out the cash to everyone in the last couple years did we get any or ask ? Emery Foundation have giving tons of money every year to rail preservation have we ever applied ? Sorry for the rant no offense to anyone but as members we need answers to these things.

Mason,
That may be, but I don't think anyone wants to see our materials leave the Roanoke area. After all, that is where the N&W was headquartered and where our mindset eternally remains.
As I interpret what you are saying, everything would go back to Richmond. NS gave all that collection to the Virginia Museum of Culture and History there when they left Norfolk for Atlanta, and they have done absolutely nothing with it.

Gentlemen,
Back under the leadership of Jim Gillum, we had an arrangement, that if for some reason the archives would become defunct, the collection would go to the Virginia State Library. Because of this, N&W material in their collection came to the N&W HS archives collection.

Carl,
Ken and I are already on top of that. We are beginning to explore what will be the long term disposition of the society's archival material. In fact, we have a meeting with the Roanoke College librarian this coming Monday.

In the current "Arrow," there is some commentary about storage space for the society archive/library. Has the society considered approaching a college/university and asking if they would accept these materials into their Special Collections holdings? They might accept the materials for free. This would place the society's holdings in a secure and properly managed environment.
That type of affiliation might even open some doors into being able to hold the annual meetings on the college campus for free during the summer.
Just some thoughts
