Virginian (NW/NS) Roanoke South Yard

Some coal continues to be moved. The number of eastbound coal trains by Ellett (on former Virginian about 30 miles west of Roanoke) averages about 4 per day. This is up from about 3 a day a year or two ago. And an additional 3-4 grain, tank, and mixed freight trains use this line daily.

I saw the nearly empty South Yard last week. I also saw it last week with about 5 or 6 tracks occupied ( coal, as well as grain and tank cars).
