Tim,
I knew better. I even have a Yearout aunt who lives in Huntsville and has been in touch with Kim Hensley down though the years.
I would like to see you again, so please let me know the next time you come to the NWHS archives, and I'll try to be there then.

Gordon,
No, Al Hock was the great-grandfather, whatever in the lineage, of Kim Hensley of Huntsville, AL, no relation. I have always found an interest in those Railroad Magazine stories by/about him -- even found and took pictures of his Bluefield house.
My grandfather, Clyde Hensley was a C&O Kanawha/New River locomotive engineer. It was my mother's father Ben K. Bryant, who was an N&W Kenova yard conductor killed on duty in 1926.
By the way, I have some Princeton things for you, next time I am at the Archives. Probably make a trip later this month.

Tim,
Your mention of your great-grandfather, Al Hock, brought back memories.
I think you know that my grandfather C. E. Yearout (Pocahontas Division engineer) and family were friends of the Hocks in Bluefield. I remember visiting the Hocks with my mother when I was a wee laddie. I was thrilled when your great-grandfather gave me a copy of Railroad Magazine with his article in it. One item that Hock wrote about must have impressed me because I still remember what he told us about his employment in road service, "I have stood on a bouncing engine tank clinging to the hand holds on the cab, so worn out with loss of sleep after long hours on duty that I dosed off standing up."

All,
This two-part Railroad Magazine series appeared in several N&W books, particularly Wolfe/Wilson/Mandelkern's: Norfolk & Western's Clinch Valley Line. Seems to me like it also appeared in The Arrow?

Hello, Marty:
A the end of the article, it mentions that further recollections were to appear in the following month's issue. Have you scanned those as well?
Best wishes,

Here's an interesting first-person accounting of working on the Pokey in its very early days, from Railroad Magazine's March 1945 issue. (Its early years are an underappreciated treasure trove of first-person "Tails of the Rails".)
