The LP cylinders presented a problem extending the smokebox forward for the SB feedwater heater. Apparently Roanoke thought the design of 2171 was the solution. In time, they decided they had made a mistake, so 2177 was the engine chosen for the trial solution, and they used a fireman side cutout similar to that used on the A. thankfully, they revised the design before building the 2188, and all the later retrofits followed the pattern of 2189. I got to watch all this in real time living in Bluefield.

Chris,The smokebox is not open to "mud and grime", so, you can rule those two out. However, cinders could collect inside.
One thing that I have found very interesting is, if you look at British steam photos, there are many showing men scooping out shovels full of cinders from the smokebox. I don't think that I have seen any, or very few, photos of that happening here in the U.S.
Then there is the question of why in the wide wide world of sports was it placed under the smokebox front to begin with? The Class A's never had their SA FWH there and that was 10+ years before any Y6b!
I think ease of maintenance is a better reason for the move.

Abram,
If I recall correctly, prior to the redesign the “chin” of the smokebox face was open at the bottom which allowed grime and mud to accumulate inside the smokebox. The new design included a plate on the “chin” opening to keep out mud and grime. This kept the inside of the smokebox cleaner and eased maintenance efforts. If I remember correctly, Bud Jefferies filled me on this years ago in a discussion about the oddities of the 2177.
