Chris,The smokebox is not open to "mud and grime", so, you can rule those two out. However, cinders could collect inside.One thing that I have found very interesting is, if you look at British steam photos, there are many showing men scooping out shovels full of cinders from the smokebox. I don't think that I have seen any, or very few, photos of that happening here in the U.S. Then there is the question of why in the wide wide world of sports was it placed under the smokebox front to begin with? The Class A's never had their SA FWH there and that was 10+ years before any Y6b!I think ease of maintenance is a better reason for the move.Jimmy LisleSent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone

The new design included a plate on the “chin” opening to keep out mud and grime.  This kept the inside of the smokebox cleaner and eased maintenance efforts.  If I remember correctly, Bud Jefferies filled me on this years ago in a discussion about the oddities of the 2177.
