The K-3, Wha Might Have Been

The other K engines and the Ms had a long enough main rod that the stresses
weren't a problem.  Same wau with the J.  With the rear lead truck wheel
gave enough room to make the design practical.
The K-3 was the pm;u blot on the N&W's counterbalancing escutcheon.
When you look at the Y engines and how fast they could run without damaging
themselves or the track it's amazing.  The J might just have been the most
perfectly balanced engine ever built on this side of the
 Atlantic Ocean.  It was comfortable at driving wheel RPM of better than
500.
