LC1 and 2

Mike,

I have not seen any reply to your question, so I apologize if I have
overlooked such.

The N&W LC1 unit had a traction motor between each pair of driving
wheelsets resulting in a driving wheel base for each unit of 31 feet.
By contrast, the Y6 steam loco had a rigid wheel base for each engine
that was only 15 feet, 9 inches.  Obviously if the LC1's 31-foot driving
wheel base were rigid it would never have operated on N&W's curves, so
each pair of driving wheels and associated motor had to be in a swivel
truck.

By contrast, the N&W LC2 and VGN EL3A locomotives were designed with the
traction motors outboard of each pair of driving wheelsets resulting in
a 16-foot rigid wheel base for each unit, about that of the Y6.   The
elimination of the swivel trucks eliminated a lot of wear and maintenance.

I hope that this helps.
