1st Class J series 600-604

This first set of J's had multiple bearing crossheads. Underneath the
crosshead is something I can't locate on any other steam loco with this
crosshead type. It's not on the first  A's, either.  Does anyone know the
purpose of this piece? I have found an image of a J in '57 with this still
there, so it seems to have likely lasted until the end of the 600-604's.
