Thanks Rick. I never considered that they just used colored light bulbs. Much more simple than a mechanism to move a colored lens.

These particular class lights had three lamp sockets in them. One had the standard mazda screw base like your average light bulb, that was the clear light. Then on either side of that socket was two smaller sockets with green bulbs. The were bayonet base and the size of the older automobile brake lamp bulbs. 

 

These class lights found on the J and K2a class as well as the Jawn Henry were Shop made at the Roanoke Locomotive Shops.

Like the normal class lights, there should be a lever that when flipped brings a green lens in front of the bulb.

How do the class J (and K2/a?) classification light lenses work?  Are there color filters inside? Did they have/need green lights?

It looks like maybe the lamp could swing forward 90 degrees to show green, if that vertical chrome piece I see between the mount and the lamp face is a hinge?
