Hi Abram,
Google has a variety of add-on features in Google Maps that you can access with a low cost Google account. It allows you to suggest corrections to Google’s maps, add new points of interest, review businesses, etc. The best feature is the afore referenced My Maps, on which you can draw your own (or collaborate with others to draw) maps and do various other map-y things. Based on your descriptions, there is some Venn-overlap between the two tools (Earth and MyMaps).
Linked below is an example showing the route of the N&W and C&O (and others) through Ohio, with the N&W’s proposed low-grade line between Locks (below Chillicothe) and Kingston laid out - look for all the pins. A neat find from the archives.
I have Earth installed on my machine, but I haven’t done much with it. If it is as colloratively-y or shareable as My Maps, I should give it another look. I suspect My Maps is a lighter weight subset of Earth?

I am only some old clod who hoes turnips and still uses a Telegraph, you know. Most of what little I know, I have learn't from my kids.

It is a VERY powerful tool, allowing you to do measurements, take elevations, draw your own line or path maps, create a grade profile between two or more points, place notations, and color-code all these entries on the satellite imagery, and it will also calculate for you the square footage or acreage of any geometric figure you draw on the satellite imagery. You can also layer over top of the satellite imagery a portion of a USGS Topo, if you like. Of course, if someone has already done all these things for you, all you have to do is open the file, scroll left/right, up/down on the screen, and enjoy the view. And everything is in 3-D !
