 Through the 1960s, N&W operated a fall leaf special Bristol to West Jefferson and return on an October week end..  As the 1960s progressed, the branch was only producing seven revenue loads a day..  The profit was off-set by maintenance of the multitude of wooden trestles.  In 1970, N&W concluded that it was time to file for abandonment.  Hearings were held at the court house in West Jefferson, a judge from northern Virginia presiding.  Opposing the abandonment was the elderly lady who owned the West Jefferson newspaper.  At noon on a Friday, it became apparent that the judge wanted to return home for the week end.  He asked the attendees if there were any objections to postponing the hearing until the following week.
