I recall riding one of those excursions, probably in 1961. If one desired to ride in the engine, all one has to do was ask. I did ask and was treated to the engine from West Jefferson to Whitetop on the return.

Through the 1960s, N&W operated a fall leaf special Bristol to West Jefferson and return on an October week end.. As the 1960s progressed, the branch was only producing seven revenue loads a day.. The profit was off-set by maintenance of the multitude of wooden trestles. In 1970, N&W concluded that it was time to file for abandonment. Hearings were held at the court house in West Jefferson, a judge from northern Virginia presiding. Opposing the abandonment was the elderly lady who owned the West Jefferson newspaper. At noon on a Friday, it became apparent that the judge wanted to return home for the week end. He asked the attendees if there were any objections to postponing the hearing until the following week. While looking down on.his date list , he specifically asked the newspaper lady if she had any comments. The third time he asked, after receiving no responses, he looked to the audience and .saw that she was asleep. . Harry Bundy
