Chris,

Thanks very much for your reply. After doing some research on the web for Powhatan, I came across the attached PC that would tend to confirm your call.

Now can anyone tell me where the company store was located relative to today's landmarks? My guess is that it would have been close to the point that Google Maps

places to show Powhatan just as the line comes out of the curve where the tipple used to be. I would appreciate any info that would locate it more exactly, perhaps with

proximity to Tavern Street?

Thanks again,

Jim Cochran

Jim,
I’m pretty sure that this is Powhatan probably between MP N383 and N384.
The video this is from is one of my favorites with the good run by’s of eastbound
coal climbing the Elkhorn grade. When I was working as a dispatcher on the “Pokey” if a train was going to stall, a good percentage of the time it would be near Powhatan. Usually, if the train couldn’t stay 9 mph or above through Powhatan, the crew would either stall or need to stop to cool traction motors. The “spike” in the grade at Huger was a pretty reliable predictor for the climb up Elkhorn. Precluding any locomotive failures, minimum train speed over Huger with 6 to 7 mph subtracted would amount to minimum speed between Powhatan and Elkhorn Tunnel.
