Here is a quick example of what we are talking about.

Two views from our Archives. Top is 1218 in regular service, bottom is 1239 in regular service. Notice the arrow pointing to the end of the jacketing on 1239.

The thing I believe you are seeing is something N&W to my knowledge, never head, a “Coffin” feedwater heater, show on this image I found on the internet.

Thanks for the explanation.  I can understand the concept.  I have seen a few photos of steam locomotives with a “U” shaped extension over the smokebox.  Is this what it would look like?  Are there any photos of the “A” or “Y” with this feature?

    It’s just an extension of the lagging and boiler jacket out and over the smokebox . I not sure what the N&W reasoning was for sure . Quit a few of the Y class got

The same treatment , I was on the C&O 1309 crew we insulated the smokebox  that never was when in service. It helps with expansion and contraction  of the front tube sheet retaining heat so you get slower cooling . I am sure it helped on the feed water system  also on the” A” .  I am no expert but all the heat you can retained in a boiler is a good thing
