T-6 diesels

Can someone explain to me what the l plumbing is that I see on either side
of the hood, just ahead of the cab on the Alco T6 units ?  I’m also curious
about the assembly on some units at the bottom of this same piping on the
right side.  Some units have an open sided “box” hear.
What am I looking at?
