Imagine painting one of these and taking it for the contest model at the convention.

Here are some others. Seems to be only Columbus based S-1a's. I have shots of 231 in black c1954 and the graphited boiler in 1955. Unusual for this to happen in a very standard N&W to me. The shot of the 244 appears it may be graphite too c1958.

Other roads did this graphite treatment too. I have quite a few shots of Western Maryland engines like this and have seen other roads.

This video shows 241. Picture in Rosenburgs book is 231. So the Columbus shopmen didn't do just one in graphite.

I have seen other photo/video where N&W locomotives seem to be painted 
Silver/graphite.
