There's likely a very good financial reason for the changes. Many
railroads, once passenger services had been terminated, no longer required
the additional financial tax burden a larger depot would present come tax
day based upon size of course. That was a common element from back when:
smaller improved building means smaller tax burden on a specific piece of
land.

As long as freight was still coming in and waybill out, then that could
continue as did LCL in some cases but when passenger went kaput, so did
that extra sized building.
