Train orders on tghe N&W: Two Questions

Abe:I believe Jimmy is correct.  Until Duke Power's Belews Creek plant wasconstructed, the Winston District was single-track, ABS with 20-some sidingsaveraging about 3500 feet -- too short to chamber unit coal trains.  After trafficcontrol was installed, there were two passing sidings between "JK" andNorth Winston.  Yes, the other passing sidings remained (for a while), butthe timetable noted that they were not to be used for meeting trains.
Incidentally, the Durham District had been Manual Block,  until Carolina
Power & Light's Hyco plant came on line.               H. Bundy
