This is indeed interesting. When I worked for Mobil Oil Corp in the 70's one of my assignments took me to our Paulsboro NJ Refinery and following the MOC pipeline from there through the middle of PA. I can only imagine that the National Transit P/L was a part of Socony Mobil back in the day (being a part of the larger Rockefeller complex of refineries, pipelines, terminal, rail roads and equipment, etc).
This is a pretty good history of the old "Tuscarora P/L" as the latest TPL is a newly constructed gas line from Canada to Oregon. Would always welcome more on this side of the N&W heritage, although I didn't pursue any leads to N&W operations in PA. And it is always a pleasure to hear from Mr. Burnett!

With some other souls who also love arcane eccentricities, I have been having a discussion of the old Tuscarora Pipe Co. (an early oil pipeline now part of the Buckeye Pipeline,) and the old National Transit Pileline, which was owned by Standard Oil. The history, methods and practices of the early pipelines are fascinating. All the pumping stations required rail access, as coal was necessary to create the steam which drove the big pumping engines. Many of the *crossing agreements* for pipelines crossing under railroad tracks are still in effect.
There was a very brief period, gone by the early 1960s, when the N&W had a small fleet of tank cars used in hauling engine fuel oil to engine eterminals. They suddenly went away and, in retrospect, the oil was thereafter arriving by pipeline... but no one ever paid attention to the change, or asked questions.
So I wonder about how fuel oil is now delivered to Shaffers Crossing. What is the history of the pipeline which feeds the tanks there? Where does it come off the major pipeline? How is it operated? When was it constructed? What route does it follow, and where does it enter railroad property? Who, on the railroad, coordinates with the pipeline company about oil deliveries through the pipe? And so forth...
