The Virginian photos include images of EL-Cs, so that puts the photos as no
earlier than late ’56. There’s also what appears to be a ’59 Ford sedan in
the background of this photo:

Assuming all the photos were taken at the same time, that would put the
date at no earlier than fall 1959. 

 

It’s a shame that whoever scanned the Barriger photos was so careless. It
doesn’t take a railroad expert to notice that signs are backwards. And many
of the images in the collection (not just the VGN ones) were scanned at an
angle, as if someone just tossed the negative or print on the scanner and
didn’t bother to square up the image with the scanner bed.

Has anyone managed to narrow down the era of these images?  Electrification
would indicate 15 to 50.  Double track main at Elkhorn tunnel would say
after 22, I think.  Are there other clues that supply "no later than" or "no
earlier that" dates?
