whistles

I know we have actual whistles and captured digital recordings from the J
and A classes of locomotives.  What other whistles are still out there and
operational?  Does the G at the VMT still sport it's original and would it
sound if steam were put through it?  Is the one on M #475 proper?  How
about E#578, W2 #917 and the Y's?  I would suppose that some of these
classes shared the same whistle type.  Did N&W ever change/upgrade whistles
on a class or did they carry what they were born with to the grave?  Sure
would be nice to have high quality recordings of all the different
flavors.  What do we know?
