Lynchburg & Durham Star Route

"Was the Lynchburg and Durham Star route run along US 501 all the way from Lynchburg to Durham?"

The Star Route contractor drove along whatever roads were required to reach each location listed in the 1955 schedule table.  It likely included US 501 along with county roads off that spine to reach any location not along US 501.  US 501 was constructed during 1935 so the ability of the traveling public and trucking companies to use that highway as an alternative to the N&W branch line likely contributed to a significant decline in rail traffic.
