Harry, I understand. This is a fascinating ‘what-if’ topic. Was the 1910 drawing you referenced a survey of the proposed route?

 

Also, just a note to say that I’ve lately been re-enjoying your 1950s photos in Aubrey’s VGN book.

Without looking up the grades in each direction, I'd

say the proposed re-route would have had benefits

for traffic moving in either direction.  I forgot to mention

that the "By-pass" would have crossed Route #24 west

of Stewartsville.   When transferred to Roanoke,  I first

lived in a mobile home at Thaxton, and since then it

seems Thaxton comes first  and that translated meant

I considered westbound traffic only.   Harry Bundy
